Secondary Glazing Across Chichester & West Sussex

Secondary glazing is a slim second window fitted on the inside of your existing one. It keeps your original windows, and the look of your home from the street, exactly as they are, while making the room warmer, quieter and less draughty.

It is the natural choice for listed buildings and homes in conservation areas, where replacing the windows isn’t allowed or isn’t wanted. We are a local, family-run company with more than 25 years’ experience, and we survey, supply and fit made-to-measure aluminium secondary glazing across Chichester, Bognor Regis, Emsworth, Selsey, Felpham, Pagham, Barnham, Bosham, Littlehampton, Arundel and the surrounding areas of West Sussex and the Hampshire border.

Who Is Secondary Glazing For?

  • Listed buildings – keeping the original windows while making the rooms comfortable.
  • Conservation areas – such as Chichester city centre, Bosham, Emsworth and Arundel.
  • Period homes – with original timber sash or casement windows you want to keep.
  • Flats and rented homes – where the outside windows can’t be changed.
  • Homes on busy roads – cutting traffic noise from roads such as the A27.
  • Draughty single glazing – a warmer room without the cost of new windows.

Benefits of Secondary Glazing

Warmer rooms and lower heating bills

Secondary glazing seals out the draughts around old windows and adds an insulating layer of air. It can cut the heat lost through a window by up to 65%. With energy-saving low-E glass, a single-glazed window with secondary glazing can reach a U-value of around 1.5 W/m²K, against about 4.7 for the single-glazed timber window on its own.

A quieter home

Two panes with a wide air gap between them are very good at stopping noise. With acoustic glass and a 150–200mm gap, the systems we fit are tested to cut noise by up to around 50 dB (Rw), more than the roughly 35 dB of typical double glazing. It works alongside double glazing too, if you already have it.

Fewer draughts and less condensation

The inner pane stays warmer than single glazing, so less condensation forms on it, and the seals stop the draughts that make rooms with old windows feel cold.

Extra security

A second, locking window behind the first adds another barrier against intruders. Toughened safety glass comes as standard, and hinged units can have multi-point locks.

Types of Secondary Glazing

Each unit is made to measure, and the right type depends on how your existing windows open.

Horizontal sliding secondary glazing unit in a white aluminium frame, with sliding panels part open.

Horizontal sliding

Two to five panels that slide sideways past each other. The most popular choice, and ideal for casement windows and windows with vertical bars. Units can be made up to around 4.9m wide.

Vertical sliding secondary glazing unit for a sash window, with the top panel lowered.

Vertical sliding

Spring-balanced panels that slide up and down, made to line up with traditional sash windows. A tilt-in version swings inwards for easy cleaning. Units can be made up to around 3.3m tall.

Hinged secondary glazing unit in a white aluminium frame, opening inwards like a door.

Hinged

Opens inwards like a door, hinged at the side, top or bottom. Good for tall windows and windows you open often, with multi-point locking available.

Lift-out secondary glazing panel in a slim white aluminium frame.

Lift-out

Light panels that lift out completely when you need to open the window or clean. Ideal for windows you rarely open, and the least visible option.

Fixed and bespoke shapes

Fixed units suit windows that never open and large panes of glass. Arched, curved, bay, circular and angled windows can all be matched with made-to-measure units.

Frames, Colours and Glass

The frames are slim, powder-coated aluminium, so they are strong without being bulky and sit neatly inside the window reveal. They come in white, cream, brown, anthracite grey and black, or any of over 200 RAL colours to match your woodwork.

Toughened, energy-saving low-E glass comes as standard. For noise, we fit acoustic laminated glass, and laminated safety glass is available where it is needed.

Secondary Glazing for Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas

Because it is fitted inside and can be taken out again without damaging the original window, secondary glazing is the option conservation officers are happiest with. Planning permission isn’t needed, as nothing changes outside.

That is why it is widely accepted in listed buildings: the original windows stay exactly as they are. If your conservation officer would like to see the details, we supply the drawings and product information, and we fix the units so that they can be removed cleanly in the future.

Secondary Glazing or New Windows?

If your windows are listed, in a conservation area, or simply too good to lose, secondary glazing keeps them and solves the cold, the draughts and the noise. If your frames are rotten and there is nothing stopping you replacing them, new double or triple glazing may be better value, and for old timber windows we also offer reglazing and slimline double glazing. We will give you honest advice on which suits your home.

How It Works

1. Free survey – we look at your windows, measure up and recommend the right type, glass and air gap for warmth or noise.

2. Made to measure – each unit is made to the exact size and shape of your window, in the colour you choose.

3. Fitting – fitted inside the existing window by our own team, with minimal disruption and nothing changed outside.

4. Final check – we make sure every panel slides, opens, locks and seals properly before we leave.

Nothing is too much trouble, extremely helpful with good advice when trying to decide on spec etc. In short, I would say how companies used to be with great old fashioned and genuine service. Secondary Glazing Questions

What is secondary glazing?

A slim second window fitted on the inside of your existing one. It traps an insulating layer of air, cuts noise and draughts, and leaves the outside of the building exactly as it is.

Do I need permission for secondary glazing in a listed building?

Generally, no. Secondary glazing is fitted inside and leaves your original windows untouched, so planning permission isn’t needed, and it is widely accepted in listed buildings because it can be removed later without any harm to the original window. If your conservation officer would like to see the details, we’ll supply the drawings and product information for you.

How much noise does secondary glazing block?

With acoustic glass and a wide air gap of 150–200mm, the systems we fit are tested to cut noise by up to around 50 dB (Rw), more than typical double glazing. It is one of the most effective ways to quieten a room on a busy road.

Can secondary glazing be fitted to sash windows?

Yes. Vertical sliding units are made for sash windows, with the panels lined up with your sashes, so you can still open them and the look from inside stays neat. Tilt-in versions make cleaning easy.

Can I still open and clean my windows?

Yes. Sliding and hinged units open to give you access to your windows for ventilation and cleaning, and lift-out panels come out completely when you need them to.

Does secondary glazing cause condensation?

Usually it reduces condensation, because the inner pane stays warmer than single glazing. A well-sealed fit matters, and we check ventilation when we survey.

Which areas do you cover?

We cover Chichester, Bognor Regis, Emsworth, Selsey, Felpham, Pagham, Barnham, Bosham, Littlehampton, Arundel and the surrounding areas of West Sussex and the Hampshire border.
