Traditional Timber Sliding Sash Windows in Hamble
Traditional Timber Sliding Sash Windows in Hamble
Keystone Glazing recently completed the replacement of traditional timber sliding sash windows at this beautiful listed property in Hamble, Hampshire.
The existing windows formed an important part of the character of the property, so the replacement specification called for new timber sliding sash windows that retained the traditional appearance and proportions associated with the building.
The result is a sympathetic window replacement that preserves the classic appearance of the property while giving the homeowners the benefit of newly manufactured timber windows.
Replacing Traditional Sash Windows at a Listed Property
Working on a listed property requires particular consideration to preserve the architectural character of the building. Modern replacement windows can often look noticeably different when details such as frame proportions, glazing arrangements and traditional sash styling aren’t respected.
Fortunately, we had help. Listed properties such as these require planning with the support of the local authority, a planning application and review process with the Heritage Officers at Eastleigh Borough Council. Their duty is the preservation of the appearance of the windows and the neighboring areas, ensuring that heritage, practicality and aesthetics are all equally measured.
Timber was the natural choice for the project, providing the authentic appearance and detailing required for such a traditional property.
Traditional Timber Sliding Sash Windows
Across the property, the replacement windows complement the existing architecture rather than introducing a noticeably modern window style.
The use of timber also provides the depth, texture and traditional finish that works particularly well on period and listed properties, where the windows contribute significantly to the overall character of the building.
There are many styles of traditional sliding sash windows. In this case, the finer details meant the inclusion of Georgian bar, deep 50mm plant-on cill, no run-through horns, and chamfered staff beading.
