Hinged Secondary Glazing for a Barn Door

Hinged Secondary Glazing for an Old Plank Door in Oving

Project Overview

This period farm conversion in Oving, just east of Chichester, has an old ledged and braced timber door with black strap hinges and a traditional latch. It is exactly the kind of detail that gives a barn conversion its character, so the owners wanted to keep it.

The trouble with plank doors like this is that air finds its way round the edges and between the boards, and they let the cold straight in. Rather than replace the door, we fitted secondary glazing on the inside of it.

Closed: the old plank door is still on show behind the glass.

Open: the unit swings back so the old door can still be used.

What We Fitted

We made a hinged secondary glazing unit in a slim white aluminium frame, measured to fit the opening on the inside of the door. It opens like a door itself, so the old plank door behind can still be opened and used, and closes snugly to keep the draughts out.

Clear glass and a slim frame mean the old door is still on show from inside the room, and nothing has changed from the outside.

New Windows Too

On the same job we replaced the property’s old timber windows with rosewood uPVC windows, which give the warm look of wood without the painting and upkeep.
